The
Krewe of Armeinius
showcased in
"The
Sons of Tennessee Williams"
The documentary THE SONS OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS is the
story of the gay men of New Orleans who created a vast
and fantastic culture of "drag balls" starting
in the late 1950s. These men worked with the traditions
of Mardi Gras to bring gay culture into public settings
in the early 1960s. By 1969, there were four gay Mardi
Gras krewes, legally chartered by the state of Louisiana,
throwing yearly extravaganzas at civic venues around the
city. "Society matrons begged for ball tickets from
their hairdressers". They succeeded in bringing
straight and gay people together in public many years
before a metropolitan pride march could claim to do so.
This, as of yet unreleased
documentary film, by Tim Wolff, heavily features Armeinius,
with video from the 40th ball tableau. Sons has been shown
at the San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in
June 2010. It made its East Coast premiere as a kick off
for the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival
and at the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film
Festival in September. A quick web search will bring up
many video clips.
